Order and Havoc

For Honor had a terrible launch. Interest in the game was massive, and preview play sessions within controlled conditions were positively gushing. It was, and is, a well-designed medieval combat game. Lots of loading screens, and then this: Fast-forward to now, and Ubisoft has overhauled the network architecture to include dedicated servers on its PC version. Ubisoft is being very loud about the improvements. But has it worked? Is it free of the desynchronisations, lag, and other bugs plaguing it? By that we mean, we literally could not play For Honor when it launched. A later update would detect a desynch and replace all the enemies with bots.

We just announced Clash , a new team-based competitive mode coming to League in We saw that players struggled to manage their team effectively and it felt like a chore to get four friends together who would commit to grinding all year to get to Diamond. This, coupled with increasing queue times and poor quality matches, made for a pretty crappy experience. Considering how fun League can be when playing in a group of friends, the Ranked Teams queue ultimately felt like a missed opportunity.

We looked to esports, grassroots tournament play, and our own Riot Rumble , asking ourselves if we could bring the same feels to League players in-client. Could we build something high-stakes and team-based that was competitive for all players, regardless of skill level?

Share on Linkedin There are few games that manage to replicate the heart-pounding elegance to a melee weapon based duel, and fewer still that manage to elevate it to a level that For Honor does. What this new third-person swordplay action game manages to achieve in its restrained gameplay is incredible. Its emphatic highs are marred by its online systems though, which send it crashing back down with a thud. The core premise of For Honor is simple to grasp on the surface.

Your fighter has three stances, with a flick of the right stick moving you between them. You similarly can see the stance of your opponents, which is crucial to both attack and defense.

Those who fire up Medal of Honor: Warfighter (out Oct 23rd for PC, PS3, and Xbox ) will be greeted with quite the substantial patch before being able to play even a second of the game online.

For Honor could have been so much, it could have shown that Gameplay is more important than anything else … and man, Ubi could fuck it up! Because of the complexity and difficulty of it. Additionally there already exist some games that fill this genre, like Mount and Blade or Chivalry. Why is For Honor so interesting then? Just take a look at the games and mechanics of this genre from a mainstream perspective: For Honor could change that.

As a result you get a mix of appealing visuals and a challenging but not hard battle system, which lures more gamers than ever into this genre.

Edit In this game mode, two teams fight for control of the battlefield by taking objectives and eliminating enemy players. There are three control points: One side is the Attackers, who are in Orange, whereas the other is the Defenders, in Blue. Being an Attacker or Defender will mostly only change the intro and outro cut-scenes of each round. At the start, a large group of soldiers will spawn and charge at the center control point. Afterwards, groups of soldiers will spawn regularly and do the same.

The center control point is arguably the most difficult to capture as you need to first clear out enemy soldiers occupying it. The side control points are either equidistant from both spawns or placed so that each spawn has a point closer to them. Many maps have traps such as drawbridges and gates that can be used to kill enemies or otherwise block pathways.

Others have ballista at the side control points.

However, players are beginning to run into several network, matchmaking, and server errors while playing For Honor, most of which lead to a drop in connection or the game outright ending. Sadly, this means it will be far easier for a match to just end abruptly or have a difficult time finding pairings for players. Given the lack of dedicated servers in For Honor, much of the problem will rest at the hands of others players in the game itself.

While it may not be nearly as severe thanks to the smaller number of players, having a strong connection is important if you want to ensure you rarely drop.

All matches are timed events. Duels are simple “to the death” events, which end when one player dies. In a Brawl, players fight and die over and over, and the player with the most kills at the end of a match is the victor. In Brawls, combatants are allowed a maximum of one Estus and one Ashen Estus flask, which become refilled by killing an opponent once per life or respawning after death. Brawls have several different formats, team-based 2v2 and 3v3 or more chaotic formats like 4 player and 6 player free for alls.

Upon dying players spawn back in with a potent Wrath of Gods blast to prevent spawn camping. This is indicated by a light blue chestplate and sword icon next to their name. Using a team password in 2v2s and 3v3s allows for matches between duos of different level ranges. The higher level team may get downscaled as a result. Password Matchmaking The password matchmaking in the arena allows for a variety of customizations.
